Added-sugars disclosure is required by the FDA for honey makers

A recent article by the Wall Street Journal states that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will require maple syrup and honey makers to include added-sugars disclosure on their “Nutrition Facts” labels – part of a revamp of America’s nutrition-labeling rules as the nation battles obesity.

Honey products are often diluted with corn syrups to produce larger quantities. This also dilutes the natural and beneficial compounds which are used for medicinal purposes and are full of antioxidants.

In order to help the industry Randox Food Diagnostics have developed the RX misano for enzymatic analysis of honey. The RX misano is now available for the analysis of diastase, total sugars (glucose/fructose), HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural), sucrose & colouration.

Randox Food Diagnostics have also developed the Evidence Investigator which uses Biochip Array Technology (BAT), a technology that was developed by Randox, to detect multiple residues (up to 44) from a single sample. Tests for honey include a vast range of antimicrobials such as Quinolones, Streptomycin, Chloramphenicol, Nitrofurans and more.
