Honey in Canada recalled over presence of metronidazole
In Canada honey from a supplier is being recalled by the purchasing company, over the presence of metronidazole. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills bacteria. Food safety news states that the recalled products have been sold in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, according to the recall notice posted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Consumers and retail should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute recalled products. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
Import checks and antibiotic residue testing is very important as antibiotic use is prohibited in Apiculture in many countries. Randox Food offer honey testing for metronidazole and other nitroimidazoles on our Antimicrobial Array V. Randox Food Diagnostics offer drug residue screening for honey on the Evidence Investigator analyser which can test up to 54 samples for multiple residues in under 2 hours 30 minutes using our revolutionary Biochip Array Technology. Randox Food Diagnostics provide an extensive range of antibiotic screening solutions including our most recent Pesticides Array which ensure your products meet international standards and regulations regarding food safety.
Enzymatic screening is also available on the RX misano for diastase, glucose/fructose, hydroxymethylfurfural, total sugars and colouration to assess the quality of honey. Our Honey ELISA kits can screen for drug residues including chloramphenicol, oxytetracycline and tetracycline.
