25 European Border Rejection alerts in March for Aflatoxins in food and feed stuffs.

So far within the month of March 2019 there have been 25 border rejections for Aflatoxins found in food and feed products, as per the European Commission Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) Portal. All of the 25 border rejections have been classed with a risk decision of ‘serious’ and the main countries of origin where listed as Egypt and Argentina.

Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain fungi that are found on agricultural crops such as maize (corn), peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts. The main fungi that produce aflatoxins are aspergillus flavus and aspergillus parasiticus, which are abundant in warm and humid regions of the world. Aflatoxins are known to be genotoxic and carcinogenic, exposure through food should be kept as low as possible.

In order to help the industry to prevent mycotoxin contamination, processors can implement a routine screening procedure with the help of Randox Food Diagnostics technology.

Randox Food offer a multiplex screening system called Biochip Array Technology. The Randox Myco 10 Array can simultaneously detect up to 10 of the world’s most prevalent mycotoxins in under 3 hours including: paxilline, fumonisins (part of the fusarium group), ochratoxin A, aflatoxin G1/G2, aflatoxin B1/B2, ergot alkaloids, diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, T2 toxin and zearalenone. All compounds are screened at low limits of detection using Biochip Array Technology.

Randox Food Diagnostics offer a vast range of sample types which can be tested for multiple mycotoxins:
