Antibiotics detected in Bangladesh Milk
Bangladesh milk producers have seen plummeting sales after tests of 11 of their most well-known brands of milk tested positive for antibiotics. Brands have been criticised after a full investigation into the discovery found four types of antibiotics – levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin and oxytetracycline in a number of milk samples.
Scientists are fearing that the consumption of antibiotics in milk fuels the spread of superbugs and antimicrobial resistance which can lead to serious health problems including kidney and lung disease.
In south Asian countries such as Bangladesh the alarming rates at which these contaminants are being found is a cause for concern. Issues arise when unregulated consumption of antibiotics by both humans and animals plus poor sanitation causes these alarming stats.
It is believed that milk sales in the first four weeks since the findings were revealed have dropped by 45%. Islam Mehdi, spokesperson of Bangladesh Milk Producers Cooperative Union said, “Since the last week of June, sales have dropped by more than 40 percent” claiming that the study has proved to bring a major role for people who are consuming milk in Bangladesh.
