Wheat rejected by Italy from USA for high levels of Deoxynivalenol

As reported on the European Commission RASFF portal, a recent import of soft wheat from the USA to Italy was rejected by border controls, for containing residue levels above the maximum residue limit (MRL) for deoxynivalenol (DON) at 1794 µg/kg – ppb.

The National Association of British and Irish Millers (nabim) state on their food safety around mycotoxins webpage, that the legal limit for the presence of DON in wheat are as follows:

DON (ppb)

Unprocessed common wheat and barley 1250

This shows that the wheat from the USA was 544 ppb above the maximum residue limit and therefore marked as a serious risk.

Vomitoxin, also known as deoxynivalenol (DON), is a mycotoxin which occurs predominantly in grains such as wheatbarleyoatsrye, and corn. In animals and livestock, vomitoxin causes a refusal to feed and lack of weight gain when fed above advised levels.

Randox Food’s Myco 9 array allows for the detection of up to 9 prevalent mycotoxins from a single sample of cereal or cereal based feed, including aflatoxin B1/B2, aflatoxin G1/G2, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, T2 toxin, zearalenone & paxilline.
