New Report Exposes Surging Mycotoxin Risks in Animal Feed Worldwide
The 2024 dsm-firmenich World Mycotoxin Survey has revealed concerning mycotoxin contamination trends across animal feed ingredients. An analysis of 23,808 samples from 95 countries identified deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, and zearalenone as the most prevalent mycotoxins, with the highest contamination levels found in North and Central America, South Asia, and China and Taiwan.
Mycotoxins pose significant risks to animal health, welfare, and agricultural sustainability, highlighting the need for comprehensive risk management strategies to protect the feed industry and animal protein production.
A key finding in the report was the frequent co-occurrence of multiple mycotoxins in feed, emphasising the importance of testing for several toxins at once, as their combined effects can be more harmful. The survey also uncovered emerging and masked mycotoxins, which traditional tests may miss.
Experts recommend regular testing for a broad range of mycotoxins, including new and modified forms, to safeguard animal health and improve production efficiency.
Advanced methods like Randox Biochip Array Technology allow for the detection of multiple mycotoxins in one analysis, providing a clearer view of contamination risks. The Myco 9 array allows for the detection of up to nine different mycotoxins from a single sample. Myco 9 allows the detection of multiple mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B1/B2, aflatoxin G1/G2, paxilline, T2 Toxin, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, zearalenone, diacetoxyscirpenol and deoxynivalenol. Validated matrices include cereals and mixed feed, wheat, rye, oats, barley, sugar beet, soya, corn/maize, and oil seeds.
Randox Food Diagnostics also offers an Ergot Alkaloids ELISA in line with the Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1399. This test detects the lowest maximum levels of the 12 regulated ergot alkaloids for cereal-based feed, as well as wheat, rye, oats, barley, spelt and their milling products.
